Modal Personality: A Comparative Study of Hindus, Muslims and Christians

The study delineates the modal personality characteristics of three religio-cultural groups of India viz. Hindu, Muslim and Christian. One hundred college students from each group matched in age, sex, education and family income were administered measures of attitudes, self-concept, religiosity, authoritarianism and hostility. Findings indicated that middle class Hindu modal personality is characterized by favourable attitude towards family, positive self-esteem, low aggression, low religiosity and low authoritarianism. The middle class Muslim modal personality is characterized by favourable attitude towards parents and unfavourable attitudes towards family and authority, negative self-image, low aggressiveness, low authoritarianism and high religiosity. The middle class Christian modal personality is characterized by favourable attitude towards authority and unfavourable attitude towards parents, high aggression, high authoritarianism and low religiosity.
