Developmental
Changes of Interests to Animated Stories in Toddlers Measured by
Eye Movement while Watching Them
N. Takahashi |
The
purpose of this study was to investigate the beginning of story comprehension
in toddlers. Nineteen toddlers aged from 1 to 3 years watched animated
cartoons. It consisted of two parts; one was the introductory part
(`Introduction') and the other was 4 kinds of short stories. `Introduction'
was more dynamic than the story part, but there was no consistent
plot in it. Watching time and saccadic eye movement while they watched
them were analyzed. Saccadic eye movements of one year old children
were more frequent when they watched `Introduction', but the reverse
tendency was found in three year old children. These results were
interpreted that dynamic movements of each scene attracted one year
old children, and three year old children were interested in the
stories themselves rather than character' movements, and the shift
of their interests of animated stories might happen during these
two years. |
